It’s often daunting to go to a new church, or to attend church for the first time (or first time in a long time). Here is a bit of information about our services as well as some frequently asked questions so that you have a good idea of what to expect on a Sunday.

The preaching of the word of God

Anyone who visits our church will see straight away that our first and main focus is on the preaching of the word of God. We believe that God still speaks today. As His word, the Bible, is opened and explained His voice is heard through the work of the Holy Spirit. We make it our aim to listen carefully and obey; and we believe that there is no greater joy on offer than being in a relationship with God based on what He says.

Discipleship

Our second focus is on discipleship. We help people grow in their appreciation of God’s great love for them and to be encouraged and equipped to live joyful, meaningful lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. We believe that the best forum for discipleship to take place is ongoing committed friendships where we can build one another up in prayer and point each other to the Lordship of Jesus and the blessing of following him. Our church provides this primarily in our Life Groups which meet each week.

Evangelism

Our third focus we have is on evangelism. It is our heart’s desire to reach more and more people and help them to see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ – for their own good and for the glory of our God. As it says in 2 Corinthians 4:15, ‘… as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.’

Our services follow a similar structure every week – though we might swop some of the elements around if we feel it appropriate. But on any given Sunday you should expect the following: 

Someone will lead the service – keeping things flowing. They will begin by greeting people and probably introducing the idea of the day.

Then we’ll sing 3 or 4 songs together.

The leader will share family news and we might interview someone, or watch a video clip if it links into the main idea for the day.

We’ll listen as someone prays from the front.

Every week someone will read a passage from the Bible, and then one of the elders/guest will preach a sermon on that passage.

We’ll share communion once a month or so – which we’ll always explain from the front.

We’ll generally finish off by singing a song, or simply closing in prayer.

We’ll serve coffee and tea after the service. It’s a great time to meet some of the regulars/other visitors and get to know more about us.

Where do I go?
What time do I arrive?

Our service starts at 10h30. There is a welcomer to receive you and show you where to go.

What do I wear?

We’re not hung up on any specific clothing. We believe Jesus meets us where we are at so we don’t need to put on a show for him … so if you’d like to dress formally or casually you are most welcome to do so.

Where do I sit?

There is no allocated seating so sit where you’re comfortable. 

Does it cost anything?

Not at all! You are our guest and not expected to contribute. We also don’t pass a collection bowl/plate around as it makes things unnecessarily awkward. Those who have committed to FCC as their church family support the work and contribute financially. You can read up more about why/how to give by clicking here.

Do I have to do anything?

No, you won’t be asked to say or do anything in the service… although we might, as a church, say a creed or pray the Lord’s Prayer from time to time. If you don’t feel like singing or praying during the service , you’re welcome just to sit in and listen.

What kind of songs do you sing?

Currently we sing about 5 songs during a service. Our songs are mostly modern, but we’ll pull out a hymn every now and then if appropriate. We’re less worried about who the artist/publisher is than about the content of the song. We want to sing songs that bring across truth in their lyrics, helping us not only to know more about Jesus and what he’s done but to love him more because of it. You’re welcome to sit/stand/raise your hands/tap your feet or just read the words while we sing.

What kind of sermons can I expect?

Our preachers preach from the Bible. What we mean by this is that we will read a passage and then have it explained and applied. We will usually work through books of the Bible, looking at a small section of it every week. From time to time we will deviate from this and listen to what the Bible has to say about a particular topic/issue or concept.

What about my kids?

We are a family-friendly church, and your kids are most welcome.
